Unidentified Wellington at Dishforth airfield.
On the evening of 27th March 1943 the crew of this 426 Squadron aircraft were undertaking a night flying practice flight but on landing at Dishforth the starboard main wheel tyre burst, the aircraft ground looped and the starboard undercarriage leg collapsed.
Pilot - Sgt Bernard Daniel Charles Cox RAFVR (1331831).
Crew - Names unknown.
Bernard Cox had flown with 9 Squadron until posting to 426 Squadron on 2nd March 1943. He and his crew were then posted away from 426 Squadron a few weeks later and eventually were posted to 142 Squadron. On 7th July 1943 he was the pilot of a Wellington that failed to return from an operational flight over the Mediterranean. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Malta Memorial.
