Unidentified B-17 damaged in the air, landed at Driffield airfield.
The only reference to this incident that I have currently located is within Driffield airfield's record book "AIR28/222".
The states that on 21st May 1943 "A Fortress aircraft landed from a daylight operational sortie. The mid-under gunner had been
injured by a cannon shell. He had sustained wounds of the right leg and right arm, with numerous foreign bodies in the limbs.
He was removed from the aircraft with little difficulty and taken direct to Driffield Base Hospital. After collapsing following
operation he subsequently made good progress."
Given this was a daylight operational flight then this would have been a USAAF B-17 Flying Fortress. Nothing else is known about this event or the name of the USAAF airman.
