On the evening of 19th November 1943 the crew of this 102 Squadron aircraft took off from Pocklington airfield at 16.30hrs to undertake an operational flight to bomb Leverkusen. On their return to base the aircraft overshot the runway and crashed through the boundary ditch which removed the undercarriage. The landing was made before midnight.
102 Squadron Halifax JD469 "DY-U" was the only aircraft to be used by 102 Squadron on the 19th November 1943 but not used operationally on 22nd November 1943. On this later raid "DY-U" was Halifax JB844. While the squadron records do not state as much it appears to me that Halifax JD469 was the aircraft damaged on 19th November 1943 and then replaced by JB844 three days later.
