Unidentified Warwick (BV404?) at Croft airfield.
On 15th December 1943 a Warwick is listed in the Croft airfield record book as landing there on this date. It was deemed unservicable when it was time to be flown off so remained at Croft to be repaired. Croft's station orb also states that on 15th December 1943 fog prevented any aircraft from flying at Croft on this date. I am assuming that the crew of the aircraft found that flying conditions prevented them going any further so made a landing at Croft. Croft's record book that states that it was passed as servicable on 9th January 1944 and flown out on 14th January 1944 to 41 Group (which was Maintenance Command).
Nothing in the 280 or 281 Squadron records that could relate to any Warwicks belonging to any of the Thornaby based Warwick squadrons being flown or damaged on 15th December 1943 fits. 281 Squadron was in the process of receiving new Warwicks in December 1943. In January 1944 one aircraft, Warwick BV404, is listed as damaged Cat.Ac and 16 Group were asked to provide a replacement. The 281 Squadron records seem to list BV404 as arriving at Thornaby on 9th December 1943 and was the first to arrive.
