Dornier Do217 U5+IL over Hull, returned to base.

On the night of 13th / 14th July 1943 this aircraft took off from its base to bomb Hull, while flying over the Hull area it collided with an unidentified night-fighter which must have damaged both aircraft. The wireless operator was thrown out or baled out of the Dornier and died as a result. His body was found in the Sunk Island area. The identity of the Allied night-fighter is not yet known but must also have sustained some damage.

Wireless Operator - Uffz Hugo Pankuweit, aged 22, buried Hull Northern Cemetery, Yorkshire.

Pilot - StFw Wolk. Uninjured and returned to base with aircraft.

Rest of Crew - Names unknown. Uninjured.

Uffz Pankuweit's grave at Hull Northern Cemetery. The basics of this airman's story have come to light through the research of Bill Norman and to date little else is known about the incident. I would direct anyone with an interest in this or any other Luftwaffe incident in Northern England to Bill's website at "www.billnorman.co.uk".
