During the night of 11th / 12th May 1943 a fire within a dispersal hut of "D-Flight"; 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit sadly killed four members of ground crew and injured a further four others with one later dying of his injuries. A number of those, or possibly all, were members of 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit. No aircraft were damaged but this incident still deserves a mention for it's significant loss of life.
