Wellington Z1328 at Holme on Spalding Moor airfield.
On the evening of 5th February 1942 the crew of this aircraft were undertaking a night-flying exercise and left Breighton airfield to begin the flight. The aircraft had
landed at nearby Holme on Spalding Moor airfield during this exercise and when taking off again the aircraft's tail unit struck frozen snow, this damaged the tail unit and
the aircraft then made a circuit and landed at Holme where the tail unit collapsed. No casualties were sustained and the aircraft was later repaired.
Pilot - Sgt James Henry Ware RAAF (402897), aged 24, of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Wellington Z1328 was built to contract B.97887/40 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Hawarden and was awaiting collection in October 1941. It was initially received by 44 M.U. at Edzell on 22nd October 1941 and was placed in MU storage until taken on charge by 460 Squadron at Molesworth on 13th December 1941. It moved to Breighton with the squadron on 4th January 1942 and as a result of the mishap on 5th February 1942 Cat.Ac/FA damage was the assessment. It was repaired on site and was returned to 460 Squadron on 21st February 1942. On 2nd June 1942 it's AM Form 78 states that it received Cat.Ac/FB damage but the squadron records give no indication of what happened. The damage was repaired on site by a team from Vickers at Weybridge and was returned to 460 Squadron on 20th June 1942. On 13th July 1942 when it failed to return from a mine laying flight. Cat.Em damage was recorded and it's crew listed as missing. The aircraft was struck off charge on 1st August 1942.
Sgt Ware was killed on 17th February 1942 when Wellington Z1327 crashed near Huddersfield, Yorkshire. He is buried in Holme on Spalding Moor churchyard. It is likely
that the crew killed with him were also flying with him on the night of 5th February 1942.
