Wellington X9806 was built to contract B.97887/39 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Hawarden, Chester and was awaiting collection in July 1941. It was received by 46 MU on 31st July 1941 and was taken on charge by 101 Squadron at Oakington on 14th August 1941. It was transferred to 75 Squadron at Mildenhall on 19th September 1941 before moving on to 311 Squadron at East Wretham on 23rd September 1941. On 21st December 1941 it sustained minor damage in a flying accident which saw Cat.Ac/FA damage be the damage assessment. It was repaired on site and was immediately transferred to 1429 Flight at East Wretham on 31st December 1941. It sustained further Cat.Ac/FA damage in a flying accident on 8th May 1942 which was repaired on site and returned to 1429 Flight on 30th May 1942. On 1st September 1942 it passed to 27 O.T.U. at Lichfield and was the transferred to 6 (C)O.T.U. at Thornaby on 7th November 1942. Whether this was actually a return to 1429 Flight who were part of 6 (C)O.T.U. is possible. As a result of the flying accident at Thornaby on 19th November 1942 Cat.Ac/FA damage was the damage assessment, the damage was repaired on site by a team from Vickers at Weybridge and it was returned to 6 (C)O.T.U. on 5th December 1942. On 2nd March 1943 it sustained Cat.B/FA damage. The 1429 Flight part to 6 (C)O.T.U. had already moved to Silloth from Thornaby by this date. The main part of 6 (C)OTU moved a few days later. Whether the damage occurred on 2nd March 1943 is not yet known. The aircraft was taken to a works factory at Doncaster and once repaired it was flown to 18 MU on 10th July 1943. 105 (T)O.T.U. at Nutts Corner took the aircraft on charge on 11th December 1943. This unit appears to have disbanded on 5th February 1944 but the aircraft's AM Form 78 does not list a transfer until 9th August 1944 when it was flown to 8 MU. It was then given some form of major inspection and was struck off charge on 15th August 1944.
