Beaufighter X8208 at Scorton airfield.

On 11th July 1942 this 406 Squadron aircraft suffered from having the starboard engine fail on take off for a night flying training flight, the pilot crash landed the aircraft within airfield boundary at Scorton airfield, but it crashed into a hedge, struck a tree and caught fire. The crew escaped serious injury.

Beaufighter X8208 was built to contract B.65570/40 by The Bristol Aeroplane Co. Ltd. at the Old Mixon Shadow Factory, Weston Super Mare. It was awaiting collection in February 1942 and was initially placed in long term MU storage until being taken on charge by 406 Squadron at Scorton in June 1942 when the unit moved in from Ayr and began conversion to Beaufighter MkVIf's from MkIIf's. As a result of the damage sustained on 11th July 1942 at Scorton Cat.E2/FA Burnt damage was the damage assessment and the aircraft was struck off charge.

Navigator / Radar Operator - Sgt Stephen Erskine Hardy RAFVR (1330400).


Stephen Hardy later flew with 89 Squadron and 605 Squadron and was awarded the DFC for service with 605 Squadron, Gazetted in May 1945.
