Wellington X3790 at Topcliffe airfield.

On 29th December 1942 this 424 Squadron aircraft landed Topcliffe at around 12.00hrs and while taxying to a dispersal point the port wheel ran off the concrete and into soil. The wheel sunk into the ground and in a reasonably strong wind the fuselage swung around slightly and it briefly tipped up on to its nose breaking the propellers. In dropping back down the tail wheel struck the ground and the tail wheel oleo was damaged.

William Allision received a commission to the rank of P/O on probation (emergency) on 30th January 1942. He was promoted to F/O on probation (war subs) on 1st October 1942 and later to F/Lt (war subs) on 20th January 1943. He was awarded the DFC for service with 424 Squadron, Gazetted on 20th April 1943. He was killed on 28th November 1943 while instructing with 16 O.T.U. when Wellington X3923 collided with Wellington HE904 over Oxfordshire. He was twenty three years old and was buried at Greatham Church Cemetery, Hartlepool.
Wellington X3790 was built to contract B.92439/40 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Squires Gate and was awaiting collection in April 1942. It was received by 18 MU on 19th April 1942 and after a lengthy period of MU storage it was taken on charge by 466 Squadron at Driffield on 29th October 1942 two weeks after the squadron formed. On 29th November 1942 it was transferred to 424 Squadron at Topcliffe. It sustained Cat.Ac/FA damage at Topcliffe on 29th December 1942 which saw it repaired on site by a team from Vickers at Weybridge. It was returned to 424 Squadron in late January 1943. On 6th March 1943 it sustained flak damage on Ops and again sustained Cat.Ac/FA damage. It was repaired on site again by a team from Vickers at Weybridge and was returned to 424 Squadron on 3rd April 1943. Later this month 424 Squadron ceased operating the Wellington Mk.III type so the aircraft was transferred to 26 O.T.U. at Wing on 16th April 1943. It was destroyed on 7th August 1943 when it flew into houses at Winslow, Buckinghamshire. Cat.E2/FA damage was recorded, it was written off and was struck off charge on 18th August 1943.
