Hurricane W9151 at Catterick airfield.

On 30th April 1942 the starboard undercarriage up-lock mechanism of this aircraft failed to release during a ferry flight with No.6 Ferry Pilot Pool, ATA. At 12.44hrs the aircraft was landed at Catterick airfield with the undercarriage retracted and the aircraft received minor damage.

Pilot - Third Officer Leonard Oliver Biggs ATA (M.521).

Hurricane W9151 was built to contract 85730/40 by The Gloster Aircraft Co. Ltd. at Hucclecote and was awaiting collection in November 1940. It was then placed into long term storage until being taken on charge by 1 Squadron at Croydon in April 1941 when the unit began equipping with Hurricane Mk.IIb's. It then moved with this squadron over the coming weeks; on 1st May 1941 to Redhill and on 1st June 1941 to Kenley. In the middle of June 1941 it was transferred to 79 Squadron at Fairwood Common when the unit began equipping with Hurricane Mk.IIb's and then moved to Warmwell with them on 5th December 1941 and to Baginton with them on 27th December 1941. On 4th March 1942 79 Squadron left the UK for India and it looks like the aircraft was left in storage at Baginton when they left. In April 1942 it was allotted to 55 OTU at Usworth. It would appear that on 30th April 1942 6 FPP were charged with ferrying the aircraft from Baginton to Usworth, even though 55 OTU began moving to Annan two days earlier, it then sustained this minor damage on 30th April 1942 at Catterick during the flight north. Minor Cat.A/FA damage resulted and it would have been repaired on site, on completion of the repair it continued on it's journey and was taken on charge by 55 OTU who were by now based at Annan. On 11th November 1942 it collided in mid air with Hurricane AG195 during a practice dog fight and both aircraft crashed near Ecclefechan, Dumfries.
