Miles Master W8830 (probably) at Doncaster airfield.

The published Air Britain history of Miles Master W8830 suggests that it was damaged on 20th December 1942 which was also the day that 169 Squadron left Clifton and moved to Duxford. The damage was sustained in a taxying accident. Using the 169 Squadron records I cannot find any reference a mishap involving their Master in December 1942 so I believe that the date and location are probably both wrong. Correspondance in the squadron records state that on 4th October 1942 the squadron were waiting for a new propeller and also a strut shock absorber tail wheel assembly for this aircraft suggesting that the damage was sustained before 4th October 1942 and that by this date assessments had been carried out. 169 Squadron moved from Doncaster to Clifton on by 15th November 1942 and their records state that it was left behind during this move because the propeller was still not available to make the aircraft servicable. I would suggest the damage was sustained in September 1942 but have not yet located a date for the incident. The squadron records state it was repaired on 16th November 1942 and was then flown over to Clifton to rejoin the squadron.

Master W8830 was built to contract B65589/40 by Phillips & Powys at South Marston and was delivered into MU storage in December 1941. It was issued to 1 FTS at Netheravon in early 1942 and served with this unit until it disbanded on 7th March 1942. Later in the month it was issued to 5 FTS at Ternhill, 5 FTS was re-designated as 5 (P)AFU at Ternhill on 1st April 1942 and the unit was transferred to 169 Squadron at Doncaster on an unknown date later in 1942. After this date there is clearly gaps in the published histort. The squadron then moved to Clifton on 15th November 1942 leaving the Master behind at Doncaster. It almost certainly sustained Cat.A(c)/FA damage as a result of what ever mishap occurred. In the Air Britain history of the aircraft that suggests it was damaged on the day 169 Squadron moved to Duxford on 18th - 20th December 1942. I would question that but I have not seen the AM78 form which would probably clarify it. The aircraft later served with 57 OTU at Eshott in early 1943 where it served on communications duties until being struck off charge on inspection on 30th March 1945.
