Lancaster W4264 at Lindholme airfield.

On 3rd December 1942 this 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was having a daily inspection carried out when a fracture in the tail wheel mounting was found. The damage probably occurred following a heavy landing on an earlier date.

Crew - Names unknown.

Lancaster W4264 was built to contract B.69274/40 by A.V.Roe & Co. Ltd. at Chadderton and was awaiting collection in October 1942. It was immediately taken on charge by 1656 H.C.U. at Lindholme on 4th October 1942 and as a result of the mishap on 3rd December 1942 minor Cat.Ac/FA damage resulted. It was repaired on site and returned to 1656 HCU use in a couple of weeks. It was transferred to 1662 H.C.U. at Blyton on 18th February 1943. It's AM.78 movement card states that on 1st December 1943 it was transferred to 1 L.F.S. at Lindholme but it almost certainly served with 'B'-Flight based at Blyton. The aircraft later returned to 1662 H.C.U. at Blyton on 4th November 1944 and it's AM.78 states it was then transferred to 1668 HCU at Balderton on 11th May 1945. There is a problem here because 1668 H.C.U. became 5 L.F.S. on 21st November 1943. On 7th July 1945 it was converted to Ground Instructional Airframe 5289M probably by 1653 HCU who are listed as receiving it on the same date.
