Lancaster W4119 at Leeming airfield.

On 17th November 1942 the crew of this 207 Squadron aircraft were undertaking a cross country training flight. Seven and a half hours into the flight the pilot was attempting a landing at Leeming airfield at 23.50hrs when he realised the aircraft was going to overshot after touching down. He attempted to swing the aircraft to avoid over-running the airfield but the undercarriage collapsed. The aircraft received Cat.B damage that saw it receive a repair in a works factory.

Sgt Dangerfield and his crew were killed on 22nd January 1943 flying Ops to Essen in 207 Squadron Lancaster W4365. John Dangerfield is buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.
Lancaster W4119 was delivered as new to 39 MU on 6th August 1942 but a problem was found with the aircraft on 27th August 1942 that required a repair on site being made. The aircraft was repaired within two days and returned to 39 MU. On 1st October 1942 it was taken on charge by 207 Squadron. As a result of the mishap at Leeming on 17th November 1942 Cat.B/FA damage was the damage assessment that saw it taken away and receive a repair in works by A.V.Roe. Once the repair was complete it passed to 20 MU on 31st May 1943. The aircraft was then taken on charge by 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit on 13th September 1943. On 23rd January 1944 it passed to 50 Squadron but was destroyed on 12th February 1944 in a crash near East Kirkby airfield. Cat.E (burnt) damage was the damage assessment and it was struck off charge on 20th February 1944.
