Spitfire W3932 at Hutton Cranswick airfield.
On 3rd October 1942 this aircraft was to have been flown on a delivery flight and was in the care of No.1 Aircraft Delivery Flight. It had previously been a 316 Squadron aircraft who were based at Hutton Cranswick. At 14.15hrs the aircraft took off from Hutton Cranswick airfield but after becoming airborne the pilot noticed that liquid was blowing back onto the windscreen. Believing that the liquid was glycol the pilot throttled back and attempted to stop on the remaining airfield but had to retract the undercarriage to avoid over-running onto an ajoining road. The liquid leak was investigated and it was thought that it was actually trapped water inside the engine cowling that was blown out when it picked up speed.
Pilot - Sgt Cecil Spencer Smith RAFVR (1257884).
