Beaufighter T4778 at Catfoss airfield.
At 12.20hrs on 10th November 1942 this 2 (C)O.T.U. aircraft swung on landing at Catfoss airfield and hit the watch office. Both engines received damage.
Crew - Names unknown.
Beaufighter T4778 was built to contract B.41906/39 by Fairey Aviation Ltd. at Heaton Chapel, Stockport and was awaiting collection in July 1941. It was initially place in long term MU storage until being taken on charge by 2 (C)O.T.U. at Catfoss on an unknown date. As a result of this incident on 10th November 1942 minor damage assessed as being Cat.A/FA resulted and it was repaired on site and returned to the unit. When it left 2 (C)O.T.U. is not yet known. By 15th February 1944 all their surviving Beaufighters had been placed in MU storage pending disposal. The aircraft was eventually struck off charge on 28th February 1946.
