Beaufighter T4770 at Driffield airfield.

At 11.50hrs on 30th November 1942 this No.2 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit aircraft made a rough take off from Driffield airfield, both undercarriages were torn off and the aircraft came to rest with damage to both propellers and the mainplane.

Beaufighter T4770 was built to contract B.41908/39 by Fairey Aviation Ltd. at Stockport and was initially flown to 29 MU at High Ercall on 24th August 1941. It was then taken on charge by No.2 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit at Catfoss on 27th September 1941 but transferred to 235 Squadron at Chivenor on 16th July 1942. On 4th September 1942 it was transferred back to No.2 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit at Catfoss. As a result of the accident at Driffield on 30th November 1942 Cat.B/FA was the damage assessment. On 12th December 1942 it was taken to Lancashire Aircraft Corporation Ltd. Salmesbury for a repair in works. Once servicable on 20th June 1943 it was flown to 19 MU at St.Athan. It appears to have remained there until 23rd March 1945 when it went to Rotol Ltd. at Staverton. On 31st May 1945 it was taken on charge by 11 OTU at Westcott but this unit disbanded on 18th September 1945. It next went into MU store and was struck off charge on 8th February 1946.
