Whitley T4268 damaged in the air, landed at Thornaby airfield.

During the morning of 4th May 1942 this 3 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit was being flown on a navigation exercise when the starboard engine caught fire after six hours in the air. The pilot shut down the engine and must have managed to feather the propeller. Exactly over where this occurred is not known but the crew were able to remain in control, navigate to Thornaby airfield and land without further incident at 08.15hrs. The pilot listed first is the pilot named on the AM Form 1180 but his rank and / or service number cannot be correct.
