Wellington T2611 force landed, location unknown but probably Thornaby airfield.

On 9th July 1942 this 15 O.T.U. Wellington is listed in the record book of 6 (C)O.T.U. as being slightly damaged following a forced landing, unfortunately it does not state where the landing was made but it was probably at Thornaby as 6 (C)O.T.U. were based there. I include this incident on the website until it can be proven that it occurred outside Yorkshire.

Pilot - Name unknown.

Wellington T2611 was built to contract B.38600/39 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Weybridge and awaiting collection in July 1940. It was received by 10 MU on 17th July 1940 and was taken on charge by 99 Squadron at Newmarket on 27th August 1940. 99 Squadron moved to Waterbeach on 18th March 1941. On 24th October 1941 it was flowon to the Brooklands factory for modifications. Once various checks were complete it was flown to 45 MU on 24th January 1942 and then to 51 MU on the same date. It was taken on charge by 15 O.T.U. at Harwell on 21st May 1942 and it was with this unit when the incident occurred on 9th July 1942 which was probably at Thornaby. From sustaining this Cat.Ac/FA damage the aircraft was repaired on site. It was returned to 15 OTU on 18th July 1942. It was later transferred to 21 OTU at Moreton in Marsh on 18th May 1943. It served out it's time with them until being deemed beyond economic repair and being converted to ground instruction airframe 4488M in January 1944.
