Halifax R9421 at Linton on Ouse airfield.

During the morning of 17th November 1942 this 10 Conversion Flight aircraft was used on a circuit flying exercise at Linton on Ouse airfield. Six minutes after taking off and during what appears to have been the first practice landing at 10.45hrs the pupil pilot lowered the undercarriage but did not check that it was locked into place before landing. On landing at Linton on Ouse the undercarriage folded.

Halifax R9421 was built to contract 692649/37 by Handley Page Ltd. at Radlett and was awaiting collection on 7th January 1942. It was taken on charge by 102 Squadron at Dalton on 17th January 1942 but was flown to 45 MU on 12th April 1942. On 9th September 1942 it was taken on charge by 10 Squadron at Melbourne. The aircraft was then transferred to 10 Conversion Flight on 19th October 1942, also at Melbourne. As a result of the mishap at Linton on Ouse on 17th November 1942 Cat.B/FB damage was the damage assessment and it was transported for a repair in works by Handley Page. On 2nd March 1943 it was further assessed as being more seriously damaged than initially thought. Re-Cat.E was the damage assessment and it was struck off charge on 16th March 1943.
