Halifax R9389 at Sherburn in Elmet airfield.

On 12th May 1942 Walrus X9481 was taxying at Sherburn in Elmet airfield when it struck the parked Halifax R9389. The Walrus' propeller weathercocked in a strong wind while taxiing and it ran into the Halifax. The Halifax was in the care of the ATA at the time.

Aircraft unoccupied.

Halifax R9389 was built to contract 692649/37 by Handley Page Ltd. at Radlett and was awaiting collection on 7th January 1942. It was taken on charge later the same month by 102 Squadron at Dalton but at some point in early 1942 was one of a number of Halifaxes that were temporarily transferred to 1427 Flight at Thruxton for the use in the conversion of ferry pilots to four engined aircraft. As a result of the damage on 12th May 1942 minor Cat.A/GA damage would have been the damage assessment and it would have been repaired on site at Sherburn. It is then likely that on completion of repairs the aircraft was transferred to 1652 Conversion Unit at Marston Moor which became its last service unit. On an unknown date it was placed into MU store and was eventually struck off charge on 1st February 1945.
