Beaufighter R2198 at Driffield airfield.
On 4th April 1942 this aircraft was using Driffield airfield as part of a training exercise in practicing overshoots when it crashed next to the runway and was badly damaged.

Beaufighter R2198 was built to contract 983771/39 by The Bristol Aeroplane Co. Ltd. at Filton and was awaiting collection in January 1941. It was initially taken on charge by 252 Squadron at Chivenor but no date for this is known, it later served with 3 (C)OTU also at Chivenor but no for the transfer is also known. Around 3rd April 1941 it was transferred to the newly re-formed 272 Squadron, also at Chivenor. On 24th May 1941 272 Squadron left for the Middle East and the aircraft was placed in storage. It was TOC by 2 (C)OTU on an unknown date after June 1941. As a result of the crash on 4th April 1942 Cat.E/FA damage was the result of the assessment and it was written off.
