Wellington R1403 near Egglescliffe, Middlesbrough.

On 20th November 1942 this 6 (C)O.T.U. aircraft suffered an engine failure whilst on a training flight, it clipped trees and crashed at 10.52hrs near "Belmont Farm, Eaglescliffe".The most likely crash location was Bellmount Farm, Egglescliffe and as a result I don't believe this was ever in Yorkshire even before the boundary changes in the 1970s. This incident should probably be deleted from this "Yorkshire" list.

5 crew - Names unknown. All sustained injuries.

Wellington R1403 was built to contract 992424/39 by Vickers Armstrongs Ltd at Chester and was delivered to the RAF in December 1940, after acceptance it was issued to 214 Squadron at Stradishall in early 1941. It later saw service with 15 OTU and 27 OTU before moving to 6 (c)OTU in late 1942. The aircraft was written off following this incident at Egglescliffe with Cat.E2/FA damage being recorded. Although there is no record of this in the pulished history of the aircraft, it may have been on charge with 1429 Flight at the time of the crash and they were affiliated to 6 (C)OTU at Thornaby at the time. Transfer to neither unit is listed on the aircraft's AM Form 78.
