Spitfire P9563 at Catterick airfield.

At 16.30hrs on 12th April 1942 this 332 Squadron aircraft landed at Catterick airfield with the undercarriage not fully locked down. On landing it then collapsed.

Pilot - Sgt J Lofsgaard RNoAF (384).

On 11th October 1942 this pilot was flying Spitfire W3502 with 332 Squadron on an invasion sweep when he was shot down off France and became a PoW.
Spitfire P9563 had a long service history, it was built to contract 980385/39 by Vickers Armstrong's (Supermarine) Ltd at Woolston and was first test flown on 2nd May 1940 but there must have been something wrong with it because it was not delivered to 8 MU at Little Rissington until 4th July 1940. On 19th August 1940 it was taken on charge by 64 Squadron at Leconfield as a replacement for Battle of Britain losses when the squadron moved in from Kenley for a rest period. On 5th September 1940 it sustained Cat.R(b)/FA damage following a forced landing at Hartington, near Buxton. On 13th September 1940 it was dismantled and transported to Scottish Aviation Ltd., at Prestwick for repair. On 3rd November 1940 it was flown to 12 MU at Kirkbride on completion of the repair for storage. On 15th July 1941 it was taken on charge by 53 OTU at Llandow. On 2nd August 1941 it was taken to 1 CRU at Cowley for conversion to a Mk.Va and on 13th October 1941 it was flown to 37 MU at Burtonwood for storage. On 27th January 1942 it was taken on charge by 332 Squadron at Catterick and coded "AH-O". The unit had recently formed at Catterick and were working up to operational status. On 12th April 1942 it sustained Cat.A damage at Catterick. It would habe probably been repaired on site and returned to the unit. On 10th May 1942 it transferred to 164 Squadron at Skaebrae but on 23rd August 1942 Cat.E2/FA damage was recorded when the aircraft stalled and dived into the ground at Skaebrae.
