Spitfire P8653 at Driffield airfield.

During the early afternoon on 11th November 1942 this Air Fighting Development Unit (A.F.D.U.) aircraft was flown on a co-operation flight with a bomber aircraft but given the function of the unit it would seem unlikely to have taken the form of a fighter affiliation exercise. While the A.F.D.U. was based at Duxford it operated some of it's functions from Driffield airfield and at 13.50hrs the Spitfire landed at Driffield. An obstruction on the main part of the airfield saw this aircraft land close to the flarepath lighting and the port wheel ran over one of the lights. This then caused the undercarriage leg to collapse.

Pilot - P/O Norman William Walker RAFVR (112454).
