Defiant N3501 at Driffield airfield.
On 7th April 1942 this 1484 Target Towing Flight aircraft was being given an air test and at 11.45hrs was landing at Driffield airfield when a sudden gust of strong cross wind caught the aircraft, a wing tip struck the ground and was slightly damaged. The incident does not feature in the unit record book. The damage was later repaired but would be destroyed in a fatal crash on the North Yorkshire Moors later in the year.

Defiant N3501 was built to contract 751867/38 by Boulton Paul Ltd, at Wolverhampton and was awaiting collection in February 1941. After a period of MU storage it was taken on charge by 1484 Flight at Driffield on or around 14th November 1941 when the unit formed. In January 1942 1484 Flight was re-designated as 1484 Target Towing & Gunnery Flight and it continued to be used to train No.4 Group's air gunners. As a result of the landing mishap on 7th April 1942 Cat.A/FA damage was the assessment and it was repaired on site. In May 1942 the unit was re-designated again, this time as 1484 (Bombing) Gunnery Flight. It was destroyed in a fatal crash in Hackness Park on 15th September 1942 with Cat.E/FA damage being recorded.
