Defiant N3496 at Driffield airfield.

On 10th July 1942 this No.1484 (Bombing) Gunnery Flight aircraft was taxied into Beaufighter T5147 at Driffield airfield damaging the starboard wing tip of the Defiant.

Pilot - F/Sgt Derek Rowland Lord RAFVR (1169117).

Derek Lord was killed a month later when Defiant L6981 crashed near Hutton Cranswick on 13th August 1941.
Defiant N3496 was built to contract 751867/38 by Boulton & Paul Ltd. at Wolverhampton and was awaiting collection on 12th February 1941 and was immediately placed in MU storage. On or around 30th June 1941 it was taken on charge by 456 Squadron at Valley when the unit formed but it was returned to MU store in November 1941 when the unit completed conversion to Beaufighter MkII's. On an unknown date it was taken on charge by No.1484 Target Towing Flight at Driffield. 1484 T.T.Flt. was re-designated No.1484 (Bomber) Gunnery Flight on 17th June 1942. As a result of the damage on 10th July 1941 minor Cat.A/FA damage was the assessment and it was repaired on site and returned to the unit, being test flown on 28th July 1942. It was damaged again at Driffield on 25th September 1942 and on 2nd December 1942, with Cat.A/FA damage almost certainly resulting, a repair on site probably happened again each time. It was later placed into MU store again, possibly after 1484 Flight disbanded on 15th February 1944 but nothing more about the aircraft is known after the mishap at Driffield in September 1942. It was struck off charge on 1st January 1945.
