On 31st October 1942 this aircraft was being ferried from 15 M.U. to it's new (unidentified) unit when it caught fire in the air while in the air around Sherburn in Elmet. The pilot attempted a landing at 14.15hrs at Sherburn in Elmet airfield but it struck a raised bump on the airfield. The pilot attempted to overshoot, opened the throttles to take off again and to go around for a second landing but stalled the aircraft and it crashed. A fire developed and the pilot was injured.
Pilot - Second Officer John Charles Scarborough ATA (M.701). Injured.
John Scarborough was born on 1st December 1909 in Hull, Yorkshire. He became a member of the Hull Aero Club in the 1930s and gained his Royal Aero Club aviators' certificate there on 26th April 1936. Little else is yet known about him other than he died in Hull in 1991.
Seafire MB154 was built to contract B.19713/39 by Supermarine Aviation (Vickers) Ltd. and assembled at Chattis Hill. It was first flown at Chattis Hill on 8th October 1942 and two days later flown to 15 M.U. at Wroughton. As a result of the crash at Sherburn in Elmet on 31st October 1942 Cat.E2/FA Burnt damage was the damage assessment and it was written off. Presumably being flown from 15 MU to it's new unit.
