Beaufighter JL428 at Catfoss airfield.

On 2nd December 1942 this 2 (C)O.T.U. aircraft swung on take off from Catfoss at 14.40hrs. Before the swing could be corrected the starboard undercarriage collapsed and the aircraft came to rest with the starboard mainplane damaged, the undercarriage torn off and the starboard engine badly damaged.

Beaufighter JL428 was built to contract B.65570/40 by The Bristol Aeroplane Co.Ltd. at Old Mixon and was awaiting collection in October 1942. It was immediately taken on charge by 2 (C)O.T.U. at Catfoss. As a result of the damage sustained there on 2nd December 1942 minor Cat.A(c)/FA damage was the assessment and it was repaired on site. It remained with 2 (C)O.T.U. until being placed in MU store when the unit disbanded on 15th February 1944. It was finally struck off charge on 27th December 1945.
