On 7th November 1942 this aircraft was being ferried from the Vickers factory at Castle Bromwich to No.46 Maintenance Unit at Lossiemouth by an ATA pilot from No.6 Ferry Pilot Pool. At 10.30hrs the pilot was making an approach to land at Sherburn in Elmet airfield in poor visibility for refuelling, the aircraft undershot the runway, struck the ground, and also a heap of rubble in the undershoot area, and tipped onto its nose. It was damaged beyond repair. The airfield may have been having repairs made to it at the time.

Spitfire ER947 was built to contract B.981687/39 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Castle Bromwich. It was allotted to 46 MU at Lossiemouth on 6th November 1942 and the following day it was being ferried north by No.6 Ferry Pilot Pool (based at Ratcliffe). As a result of the crash at Sherburn it was badly damaged and after assessment Cat.E/FA damage was recorded. Some two weeks later it was further inspected on 19th November 1942 and struck off charge.
