Oxford EB984 near Acaster Malbis airfield.

On 13th October 1942 the pilot of this 15 (P)A.F.U. aircraft was attempting a landing in foggy conditions at Acaster Malbis airfield during a night flying exercise but struck trees on approach to land and crashed around two miles south of the airfield. The training exercise was a basic dual instruction training exercise with circuits and landings practice. One of the crew was almost certainly an instructor but it is not known which at the time of creating this webpage.

Pilot - Sgt Francis James Willox Quinn RAF (552063). Of Aberdeen, Scotland.


Francis Quinn was later posted to 153 Squadron, he was killed on 20th April 1944 but his body was never found and he is commemorated on the Malta Memorial. He was twenty three years old.

Oxford EB984 was built to contract B.67831/40 by the Percival Aircraft Co. Ltd. at Luton and was awaiting collection in May 1942. After a short period of storage it was taken on charge by 15 (P)A.F.U. at Leconfield on 13th July 1942. As a result of the crash on 13th October 1942 Cat.E2/FA was recorded and the aircraft was written off.
