On 4th August 1942 this 25 O.T.U. aircraft was being flown on a training flight when the port engine failed. The pilot was able to effect a safe landing at Pocklington airfield without damage to the aircraft. I have included this incident because three days later the aircraft was still at Pocklington being made servicable when it was struck by the crashing Halifax W7770 and damaged.
Pilot - F/Sgt Stanley Norris RAFVR (916313).
Crew - Names unknown.
Stanley Norris was later posted to 12 Squadron and would receive a commission. On 3rd August 1943 he was flying Lancaster DV224 on Ops to Hamburg when the aircraft was shot down over the target area. He is buried in Hamburg Cemetery.
Wellington DV451 was built to contract B.124362/40 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd, at Hawarden and was awaiting collection in November 1941. The aircraft was initially received by 46 MU on 29th November 1941 and was taken on charge by 25 O.T.U. at Finningley on 13th December 1941. As a result of being struck by Halifax W7770 at Pocklington on 7th August 1942 Cat.A/FA was the initial damage assessment which resulted in repair on site being made by a team from Fairfields. The aircraft was returned to 25 O.T.U. on 29th August 1942. It was taken on charge by 26 O.T.U. at Wing on 27th September 1942 and finally transferred to 11 O.T.U. at Westcott on 11th May 1943. By the end of 1944 the aircraft was in store at 8 MU and was struck off charge on 19th November 1944.
