Spitfire BL801 at Cayton, Scarborough.

At 18.00hrs on 27th May 1942 the engine of this 308 Squadron aircraft seized following an oil leak in the Scarborough area during a training exercise. The pilot made a forced landing in a field near Carr House Farm, Cayton. A Scarborough ARP report I have a copy of states that during the afternoon of 27th May 1942 six planes were seen to fly very low over Scarborough, soon afterwards a Spitfire force landed at Cayton after the engine seized. 308 Squadron's record book mentions one of their aircraft landing near Scarborough on this date and it sustaining very minor Cat.A(c)/FA damage.

Pilot - Sgt Tadeusz Turek PAF (P/793595).

Tadeusz Turek had arrived at 308 Squadron from 58 OTU the previous day to this incident at Cayton. He was later posted to 609 Squadron in October 1942. On 20th September 1943 still with 609 Squadron he was the pilot of Typhoon JP745 which was hit by flak over Le-Treport, he ditched the aircraft twelve miles off Dieppe and was found and met by a Walrus aircraft two days later. The Walrus could not take off again and taxied on the sea all the way into port on the South coast. On 15th December 1943 he was flying another Typhoon R8899 over Belgium on a "Rhubarb" operational flight (which seem to have been to shoot-up anything military that moved), he shot at two trains but was then hit by flak and struck a tree. He made for England and after his engine cut out over the Channel he managed to re-start it and made a landing in England. The damaged aircraft was found to have wood inside the radiator, a six-inch dent in one of the wings, a dented tail-plane, a hole in the propeller and no cockpit door or canopy. The unit ORB gives the damage as "Cat.B, but not entirely enemy action"! He was posted away from 609 Squadron in January 1944 and received his commission around that time. He later joined 3 Tactical Exercise Unit at Annan and on 18th May 1944 he was posted to 306 Squadron flying Mustang aircraft, but subsequently joined 133 Wing on 1st August 1944. On 4th April 1945 he was posted to 309 Squadron where he took the role of intelligence officer and having survived the War he became a schoolteacher in the Wirral. He was awarded the Polish "Cross of Valour" medal three times.

Spitfire BL801 was built to contract 981687/39 by Vickers Armstrong at Castle Bromwich and was delivered to 24 M.U. at Ternhill on 10th February 1942. It was issued to 317 Squadron at Exeter on 20th March 1942 and then transferred to 308 Squadron also at Exeter on 1st April 1942. It then moved with unit to Hutton Cranswick on 7th May 1942. It sustained Cat.A/FA damage in the incident near Cayton and was reported to have been repaired in works before being returned to 308 Squadron. It was later sent to 76 M.U. at Wroughton (Packing Dept.) on 8th November 1942 to be sent abroad. It arrived at Palma 5th December 1942 and then was sent to the Russia on 30th January 1943 and its fate there after is not known.
