Spitfire BL535 at Scorton airfield.
At 08.30hrs on 16th May 1942 this 167 Squadron aircraft stalled on landing at Scorton following a training flight and the undercarriage was broken off after a heavy landing. The damage was assessed and the aircraft was deemed beyond repair.
Pilot - Sgt John Desmond Ramsey RAF (702145).
John Ramsey later received a commission. He was serving with 87 Squadron on 10th March 1944 when he was killed and is commemorated on the Malta Memorial.
Spitfire BL535 was built to contract B.981687/39 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Castle Bromwich and was flown to 38 M.U. at Llandow on 17th December 1941. It was then taken on charge by 123 Squadron at Castletown on 28th December 1941. On 10th April 1942 it was transferred to 167 Squadron, also at Scorton, the day before 123 Squadron left for the Middle East. As a result of the damage sustained at Scorton on 16th May 1942 Cat.E/FA damage was recorded and it was struck off charge five days later.
