Wellington BK544 near Tibthorpe.

On 23rd December 1942 this 23 O.T.U. aircraft was being flown on a cross-country training flight when it was forced landed just west of Driffield, near Tibthorpe at 00.25hrs due to engine failure. This remains the sum total of all that is known currently.

Wellington BK544 was built to contract B.124362/40 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Hawarden and was awaiting collection in November 1942 and was received by 8 MU on 18th November 1942. It was taken on charge by 23 O.T.U. at Pershore on 12th December 1942. As a result of the forced landing at Tibthorpe on 23rd December 1942 Cat.B/FA damage was the assessment of the damage and a repair in works factory was needed at Sywell. The aircraft next appears on charge with 20 O.T.U. at Lossiemouth on 21st May 1943 with it passing to 22 O.T.U. at Wellesbourne Mountford just nine days later. It sustained Cat.B/FA damage on 17th June 1943 which again saw it taken away for a repair in a works factory. On completion of the repair it was taken on chagre by the C.G.S. at Leconfield on 4th December 1943. The aircraft was placed in MU store in July 1946 pending disposal and was struck off charge on 22nd January 1947.
