Whitley BD531 at Dishforth airfield.

During the evening of 12th July 1942 this 296 Squadron aircraft was flown on a training flight. At 20.35hrs the aircraft landed at Dishforth but the reason for this is not yet known. At the end of the landing run the aircraft ran over a seven inch deep rut that was obscured in long grass, this caused the tail wheel assembly to shear off. 296 Squadron were based at Netheravon, their records do not give any real indication of what may have happened. On this date the squadron flew cross country flights involving glider tows and it's likely to have landed at Dishforth during this. The day previous 296 Squadron were involved in glider towing as part of Exercise Magpie which was carried out in the presence of a number of high ranking officers and government officials but it's perhaps unlikely this took place so far north.
