Mustang AL988 at Clifton airfield.

On 12th October 1942 this Mustang suffered minor damage at Clifton airfield and although no injuries were reported nothing further is known. The aircraft was repaired and was destroyed in December 1942 in a fatal crash near off Leeman Road, York, near what is now the National Railway Museum.

Mustang AL988 was built to B.P.D. Contract A-1493 by North American Aviation at Inglewood / Dallas and was delivered to the UK by sea, arriving at Liverpool in April 1942. It was then transported by road to No. 1 A.A.U. at Speke for assembly and testing. During the last week of June 1942 it was taken on charge by 169 Squadron at Doncaster. As a result of this incident at Clifton on 12th October 1942 minor Cat.A(c)/FA damage was recorded and it was repaired on site and returned to 169 Squadron use. On 20th December 1942 it crashed near Leeman Road, York and after which Cat.E2/FA Burnt damage was recorded with the aircraft being struck off charge.
