Mustang AG642 at Clifton airfield.

On 12th October 1942 this aircraft overshot its landing at Clifton airfield, it crashed into Mustang AG596 that was parked nearby. Both aircraft sustained slight damage, later recorded as Cat.B/FA damage.

Mustang AG642 was built to B.P.C contract A-250 by North American Aviation at Inglewood, Dallas and was shipped to the UK arriving in May 1942. After assembly and testing at No.1 A.A.C. at Speke it was issued to 169 Squadron at Doncaster but the exact date for this is not yet known. It suffered this Cat.B/FA damage at Clifton 12th October 1942 and was dismantled and repaired in works by General Aviation Ltd at Hanworth. After repair it was issued to 516 Squadron at Dundonald which formed on 28th April 1943. It then transferred to 309 Squadron at Snailwell on an unknown date and served with them until February 1944 when the aircraft was placed in MU storage at 22 MU at Silloth. It was written off suffering Cat.E2/FA damage at Silloth on 13th February 1945; when it was being taken for a test flight the engine cut on take off and the aircraft crashed into the overshoot area.
