Mustang AG596 was built to B.P.C. contract A-250 by North American Aviation at Inglewood, Dallas and was shipped to the UK arriving April 1942. After assembly and testing at No.1 A.A.U. at Speke it was taken on charge by 4 Squadron at Clifton on an unknown date. It suffered this Cat.B/FA accident in October 1942 when it was parked at Clifton. It was dismantled and repaired in works by General Aircraft Ltd at Hanworth and after repair it was issued to 63 Squadron at Turnhouse in July 1943. It later moved with this unit to Sawbridgworth on 12th November 1943, and then with the unit to North Weald on 30th November 1943 before returning to Turnhouse on 16th January 1944. It later went to an MU store (probably 22 MU at Silloth) in May 1944 and remained there until being struck off charge on 7th January 1947.
