Mustang AG464 at Clifton airfield.
Said to have been on 24th August 1942 this 268 Squadron Mustang swung on landing at Clifton airfield and then collided with Tiger Moth DE405 that was already on the airfield. The Mustang was only slightly damaged but the Tiger Moth was written off as a result of the damage. The Mustang was repaired and returned to service, said to have been with 268 Squadron. The pilot's correct identity is yet to be confirmed, his name quoted elsewhere is P/O F A Kellan but the name I suggest was an officer serving with 268 Squadron not long after August 1942 so I link him.
Pilot - P/O F A Kellan(?). (Possibly P/O Francis Alexander Kelham RAF (119567)).
The 268 Squadron record books do not make any reference to this aircraft being damaged on this date.
Mustang AG464 was built to contract 15471 by North American at Inglewood/Dallas and was shipped to the UK, arriving in January 1942. After assembly and testing at MU it was issued to 268 Squadron at Snailwell in March 1942. It moved with the unit to Weston Zoyland on 20th May 1942 then returned with the unit to Snailwell on 2nd June 1942. It returned to Weston Zoyland with the unit on 9th August 1942. The Air Britain records say it sustained Cat.A(c)/FA damage at Clifton in the incident detailed above on 24th August 1942 and it was then repaired on site. On completion of the repair it returned to 268 Squadron at Weston Zoyland. In March 1943 it transferred to 2 Squadron at Fowlmere and was
reported missing (Cat.E(m)) damage on 19th April 1943 when it failed to return from a shipping reconnaissance flight.
