Unidentified Halifax damaged by flak, landed at Leeming airfield.

On the night of 14th / 15th April 1942 the crew of 10 Squadron Halifax had taken off from Leeming at 21.54hrs for an operational flight to bomb Dortmund, before the crew reached the target the aircraft was slightly damaged by flak but the crew were able to continue to the target and reach their bomb load and make a safe return to Leeming airfield at 05.55hrs. The 10 Squadron ORB does not list the aircraft identity. The damage was probably very minor.

Pilot - P/O David Dudley Plaister Joyce RCAF (J/4822), of Buenos Aires, Argentine.

Second Pilot - Sgt Martin.

Observer - F/Sgt Kenneth Richard Kettlewell RCAF, of Mimico, Ontario, Canada.

Wireless Operator - Sgt Alastair MacDonald Anderson RAF (789500), of Newfoundland.

Wireless Operator - Sgt Edward William Perry RAFVR (1252568).

Air Gunner - Sgt William James Laker RAFVR (1378670).

Flight Engineer - Sgt James Gordon Bertie Garson RAF (569190).


On the night of 1st / 2nd June 1942 all of the above except from the second pilot were flying together on Ops to Essen in Halifax W1098 when the aircraft was badly damaged and would crash in Germany. F/Sgt Kettlewell survived and became a PoW but all his other crew were killed and are now buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.
Nothing more is known of the second pilot Sgt Martin, he was posted out of 10 Squadron to 24 OTU in May 1942.
