Whitley Z9149 was built to contract 106962/40 by Armstrong Whitworth Ltd. at Baginton and was awaiting collection on 1st September 1941. It was taken on charge by 10 Squadron at Leeming shortly after delivery to the RAF as a replacement for Whitley Z6586 which had failed to return from Ops in August 1941. As a result of the damage to Z9149 on 12th December 1941 Cat.A damage was the assessment and it was almost certainly repaired on site but as 10 Squadron ceased operating Whitley's in December 1941 the aircraft was surplus to requirement when repairs were completed so it was one of eight Whitley MkV's allotted to 1481 Target Towing & Gunnery Flight at Binbrook when the unit supplemented it's Lysander fleet with Whitley's. On 2nd May 1942 this unit was re-designated 1481 (Bombing) Gunnery Flight. On 22nd September 1942 it crashed soon after taking off from Binbrook after the aileron controls jammed. Cat.E2/FA damage was the assessment.
