Whitley Z6564 damaged by flak, returned to Leeming airfield.

This 10 Squadron aircraft took off from Dishforth airfield at 22.20hrs to begin an operational flight to bomb Cologne. They released their bomb load over the target area from 14,000 feet but after bombing and while flying over an area south of Brussels the crew reported heavy flak. On their return to England they made a safe landing at Leeming at 05.40hrs and flak holes were found in the wing and starboard side of the fuselage.

Whitley Z6564 was built to contract 106962/40 by Armstrong Whitworth Ltd. at Baginton and was awaiting collection on 1st March 1941. It was taken on charge by 10 Squadron at Leeming later the same month and as a result of the damage on 29th May 1941 Cat.A/FB damage would have been the assessment although it is not listed in the published records). It would have been repaired on site and returned to the squadron. On 19th August 1941 it failed to return from Ops to Cologne with all on board being killed. Cat.Em damage was recorded on the paperwork.
On 19th June 1941 Sgt David Griffiths and Sgt Edmund Conry were still flying with 10 Squadron and was killed when Whitley Z6671 failed to return from Ops to Bremen. They are both commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
Noel Scott received a commission on 2nd July 1942 (130065) to the rank of P/O on probation and was promoted to F/O on probation on 2nd January 1943. He was Mentioned in Despatches on 1st January 1943. After completing a tour with 10 Squadron he was posted to instruct at 22 OTU where he flew in the thousand bomber raids in Spring 1942. He was awarded the Air Force Cross, Gazetted on 1st June 1943 which must have been for his role at 22 OTU. He was promoted to F/Lt on 2nd July 1944.
