Blenheim Z5746 on Burbage Moor, Ringinglow, Peak District.

On 26th January 1941 this 2 (C)OTU aircraft crashed on a snow covered moorland in the Peak District on Burbage Moor while the crew were undertaking a cross country training flight. The aircraft crashed while flying in poor visibility and sadly the crew of three were killed but the aircraft seems to have stayed reasonably intact. The crash site was said to be close to the Hathersage to Sheffield road making access for recovery vehicles easy and very little if anything exists at the site today. The aircraft had only been repaired after suffering minor damage at Driffield on Christmas Eve 1940. David Earl's book "Hell on High Ground 2" gives a detailed account of this loss and further information is to be found on Alan Clark's website detailing all Peak District Air Accidents.

Blenheim Z5746 was built to contract B119994/40 by A.V.Roe Ltd. at Chadderton and was awaiting collection in July 1940. After a period of MU storage it was taken on charge on an unknown date by 1 (C)OTU based at Silloth. On 1st November 1940 all 1 (C)OTU Blenheim's were transferred to 2 (C)OTU at Catfoss. The aircraft sustained Cat.M/FA damage on 24th December 1940 in a landing accident at Driffield and after being repaired on site it returned to the unit only to suffer this more serious incident on 26th January 1941 after which Cat.E2/FA damage was recorded.
