Wellington Z1246 at Holme on Spalding Moor airfield.

On 24th November 1941 this 458 Squadron aircraft caught fire on the ground at Holme on Spalding Moor airfield at 20.39hrs, the fire destroyed the aircraft and no casualties were sustained. The cause of the fire was not discovered.

Wellington Z1246 was built to contract B.97887/40 by Vickers Armstrong’s Ltd at Chester (Hawarden) and was awaiting collection in June 1941. It was initially allotted to 48 M.U. on 25th June 1941. It was received by 48 M.U. at Hawarden on 11th July 1941 and after testing and acceptance it was taken on charge by 458 Squadron at Holme on Spalding Moor on 26th October 1941. As a result of this fire there on 24th November 1941 Cat.E2/GA damage was recorded on the paperwork. It was struck off charge on 28th November 1941.
