Wellington W5487 at Driffield airfield, damaged by enemy action.
On 4th June 1941 Driffield airfield was attacked by enemy aircraft at 01.44hrs. This 405 Squadron aircraft was left burnt out after the attack and was written off as a consequence. 405 Squadron was the first RCAF bomber squadron to serve overseas, they began to receive delivery of their new Wellingtons in late April 1941, this aircraft
was the first RCAF bomber to be written off in the UK to date. Records show this aircraft had been flown on a number of occasions by Sgt Arthur Walroth RCAF.

Wellington W5487 was built to contract B.71441/40 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Weybridge and was awaiting collection in March 1941. It was received by 61 MU on 11thApril 1941 and after a short period of MU storage it was taken on charge by 405 Squadron at Driffield on 6th May 1941, not long after the unit formed. As a result of
the damage on 4th June 1941 Cat.E2/Burnt damage was recorded, it was struck off charge on 10th June 1941.
