Hurricane V7464 at Lindholme airfield.
On 14th March 1941 this No.1 Squadron aircraft landed on one main wheel at Lindholme, it came to rest tipped on it's nose and received minor damage. The aircraft was being transferred to 59 Operational Training Unit at Crosby on Eden at the time of the incident. The pilot does not appear to have been a serving 1 Squadron pilot but may have been a 59 OTU one sent to collect the aircraft.
Pilot - Sgt Gill.
Hurricane V7464 was built to contract 62305/39 by Hawker Aircraft ltd, at the Langley factory and was initially flown to 22 MU at Silloth on 6th September 1940. On 17th September 1940 it was taken on charge by 1 Squadron at Wittering. On 15th December 1940 they moved to Northolt and on 5th January 1941 to Kenley. On 1st February 1941 some fabric stripped off the fuselage in flight so the pilot force landed at Bredhurst 'Q' site but this resulted in Cat.Ac/FA damage. It was repaired on site and returned to 1 Squadron use. On 14th March 1941 it was slightly damaged at Lindholme airfield on route to join 59 O.T.U. at Crosby on Eden. Cat.Ac/FA damage was the damage assessment and it was probably repaired on site. It later was flown over to Crosby on Eden and joined 59 O.T.U. before the end of 1941. On 2nd August 1942 it then moved to Milfield when the unit moved. On 7th August 1942 it was declared as having Cat.B damage during a major inspection. On 13th August 1942 it went to Taylorcraft Ltd. at Rearsby for a repair in works. Once servicable on 23rd September 1942 it went to 20 MU at Aston Down. On 26th October 1942 it went to M.S.F.U. at Speke. On 27th March 1943 it sustained Cat.A/FA following a landing accident at Speke. It was repaired on site and returned to the unit. On 10th April 1943 Cat.B/FA damage resulted when it made a heavy landing at Speke. On 15th April 1943 it was sent for a repair in works but the factory it went to is not given in the records. Once servicable, on 26th June 1943 it went to 22 MU at Silloth and was then taken on charge by 59 O.T.U. at Milfield on 29th July 1943. On 29th January 1944 it was transferred to 7 P.A.F.U. at Peterborough. On 30th March 1944 the aircraft ran out of fuel in the air and the pilot made a belly landed in a field near Peterborough. Cat.Ac/FA damage was the initial damage assessment but on 12th April 1944 it was upgraded to Re-Cat.B. This saw it taken to Morrisons Engineering Ltd. at Horsey Toll for a repair in works. The repair may have been started but on 30th May 1944 a further damage assessment was made and it was struck off charge with Re-Cat.E damage recorded.
