Master T8570 at Driffield airfield.
On 7th March 1941 this aircraft crashed while the pilot was attempting to overshoot following a night landing at Driffield airfield as part of a training flight. The aircraft overshot the
flarepath and flew into the ground sadly killing the pilot.
There is a possiblity that this incident is the same incident as the unidentfied Master mishap at Driffield I have recorded as being a few days previous.
Master T8570 was built to contract 44440/39 by Phillips & Powys Ltd. at Woodley and was awaiting collection in December 1940. It was taken on
charge by 5 FTS at Ternhill in early 1941 and moved to Driffield when the unit was detached there on 1st March 1941. It sustained Cat.E2/FA damage
as a result of the incident detailed above on 7th March 1941.
Pilot (U/T) - LAC James Stephen Coogan RAFVR (1252908), aged 21, of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Buried Stoke upon Tern Church Cemetery, Shropshire.
LAC Coogan's gravestone, found on the internet and borrowed for this account.
