Tiger Moth T5372 at or near Brough airfield.
On 5th January 1941 this aircraft was making an approach to land at Brough airfield when another aircraft flew close by, the pilot of this aircraft turned the aircraft sharply to avoid a collision but then struck the ground with the starboard wing and the aircraft crashed and overturned.
Pilot - LAC Thomas Leonard Weller RAFVR (1256393).
Thomas Weller received a commission on 29th May 1941 to the rank of P/O on probation. He was killed on 7th September 1941 while flying with 10 O.T.U. when Anson N9617 crashed in Wales on a training flight. Aged twenty one years old he is buried in Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey.
Tiger Moth T5372 was built to contract 20916/39 by The Morris Motor Company Ltd. at Cowley and was awaiting collection in May 1940. The aircraft served it's full life with 4 E.F.T.S. and there is no mention of the incident on 5th January 1941 in its published history. It was destroyed on 4th December 1946 when it spun into ground on take off from a practice force landing in a field near Wheldrake. Cat.E2/FA damage was recorded on the paperwork.
