Wellington R1463 at Snaith airfield.

On 29th July 1941 this 150 Squadron aircraft was being used to undertake a night time landings training practice. The aircraft unfortunately taxied off the runway and into a hole that had been excavated. The crew had been instructed to wait for a motor van to guide them around the perimeter track to avoid the hole but had not waited for it to arrive. This incident came the following day after the pilot had struck what was described as a "high tension feeder" while landing at Snaith in Wellington T2510, probably resulting in him being told to undertake night training flying why this incident happened on 29th July 1941.

Unfortunately the 150 Squadron record book scribe was very poor in identifying their aircrew during 1941, the crew list of surnames has been take from an operational return and is the best I can offer currently.

Pilot - P/O Tyrrell.

Probable crew...

Second Pilot - Sgt Walkingshaw.

Observer - Sgt Edge.

Wireless Operator / Air Gunner - Sgt Briggs.

Air Gunner - Sgt Rawlings.

Air Gunner - Sgt Price.

Wellington R1463 was built by Vickers Armstrong ltd to contract 992424/39 and was allotted to 44 M.U. on 15th January 1941. It was taken on charge by them on 2nd February 1941 and was taken on charge by 150 Squadron on 11th April 1941. The incident on 29th July 1941 is not mentioned on the aircraft's AM Form 78. The AM78 does state that on 17th October 1941 a repair on site was carried out. The squadron records do not mention any incident but it was used a few days previously on an operational flight that may have seen it damaged. Once repaired it was then returned to 150 Squadron on 13th December 1941 and then written off in a crash near Routh, Lincolnshire on 22nd February 1942 with it being struck off charge on 27th February 1942.
